1971 Chevelle SS454 convertible, Hugger Orange (Maisto)

These Maisto Chevelle detail up nicely. A little body color paint on the front fascia and some wheel detailing are the first steps to improvement. I mixed the paint for the wheels myself since I was unable to locate paint in the proper shade.

A little chrome foil trim always makes an improvement, no matter where you use it. Here it appears on wheel opennings, door handles and lock bezels. The fawn color interior looks okay, I'm not sure the orange dash is correct however.

This is probably Maistos second weakest area. It took a fair amount of work to paint the under side of the hood, chrome the valve covers and air cleaner lid and detail the battery. The overall engine compartment details are not that outstanding but a few added details do help the cause.

Like I said above, I doubt the dash and carpet color are correct but that's the way the model came. I detailed the console and shifter and that's about it. Maisto did the rest.

This was a bit of an experiment. The trunk insert was orange like the carpet so I knew that wouldn't do. I painted it flat black and that was a help. Then I spatter painted some flat white to try to simulate the spatter paint GM used in the 70's. It looks okay, but the spatters are too large. Next time I'll try to get smaller spatters. It's still a huge improvement over the orange color it was! Here you can also see the detailing I've done to the tail lights with white paint for the backup lenses and chrome trim as appropriate.

A close up of the wheel details. I've left the lug nuts chrome as they should be.

Here is Maisto's weakest point. I've carved out the molded in driveshaft and given the car a real metal driveshaft. I've painted the gas tank and given it straps and painted the exhaust, transmission and steering link (even though it's in the wrong location). There really isn't much else that can be done here.

Enjoy Jay!
