I'll let Steve's own words describe the work here. My photos of his latest creation follow.
Well fellas, here is my third major mod. This one is based on the 49 Merc Lead Sled in Purple. When the 51's came out I really liked the hot rod look of the primered one. But I like the lines of the 49 better. So I thought I would make my own. While I was at it I would add a few other things I thought that I would have done also.
BODY:
Stripped the body and then shot it with charcoal primer to give
it that hot rod look that I was after. Painted the window trim
and all chrome black, painted the wiper blades black, foiled the
headlights to achieve the look of chrome half covers. (used the
sample foil that Scott S. sent me.), drilled the taillights, then
filled them with blue paint to achieve the look of Blue Dots.
Installed custom "CRUZ" plates by Ned ( If you haven't
tried them, you need to!!)
Tinted windows (tried various ways black paint, black marker.
What do you fellas do?)
INTERIOR:
Painted interior cream and rose, painted wheel wood, painted floor
mats and pedals black, painted door latches silver, painted dash
details silver and black, foiled steering column, foiled armrests,
foiled sill plates (again with the foil Scott sent). I used 1:
1 auto pinstripe tape for trim on seats and door panels. Removed
clutch pedal and column shifter, moved shifter to floor with mini
console for auto on floor. (Turbo 400!), borrowed the Skull from
my AG 55 for the mirror.
CHASSIS:
Primered undercarriage
Painted gas tank Silver
Painted springs Steel
Painted drive shaft Steel
Painted steering link Steel
Painted wheel backs Steel
Painted exhaust Silver
Installed electric wire from headers to mufflers and painted Silver
Installed SS wheels and tires from 69 Camaro (To make them fit
in the wheel wells I had to cut the nubs off the hubs and glue
them on so they don't roll. I guess to get the look you want
some compromises have to be made!)
MOTOR-. (Best Part!)
Installed 454 BB Chevy from the 70 BM Camaro (cut X crossmembers
to get in, but once I notched for motor and trans, it lined right
up with driveshaft heck, it was even the right length!), installed
fan assembly from 67 Chevelle for power steering unit (fan hit
radiator, so I moved it to front and fabricated an electric one),
installed radiator hose from 67 (heated it till it went were I
wanted it), installed power brake booster on firewall ( booster
came from Shiny, don't know what it's from), painted battery and
underhood details
Whew! That's it! This one took a while, but I like the way it turned out. Hope you do too! I want to thank Scooter again for opening his website to us to display our work! Scooter your pics are always great! If you have and questions or comments my E-mail is: sanddroush@beanstalk.net
